Boosting the Economy

Chapman University not only engages with its neighbors, it also plays a vital role in supporting the local economy. Our impact includes:

  • $66 million contributed to the City of Orange through faculty and staff salaries, vendor partnerships, and student/visitor spending
  • $525 million in total economic impact across Orange County, including university operations, student and visitor activity, and tax and education-related contributions
  • $278,400 generated in sales and occupancy taxes

Expanding Student Housing

Chapman University is committed to reducing neighborhood impacts by increasing on-campus housing. In Fall 2019, we met our goal of housing 50% of undergraduates in Chapman-owned residences—two years ahead of schedule.

Key highlights:

  • Freshmen and sophomores are required to live in Chapman housing
  • A 175% increase in juniors and seniors living on campus since Fall 2017
  • 1,800 new beds added by acquiring Chapman Grand and Chapman Court in Anaheim
  • 401 beds added at The K Residence Hall
  • 120% increase in Panther Village capacity, thanks to parking improvements

Chapman University is taking active steps to reduce traffic and parking impacts in surrounding neighborhoods. Our goal is to limit the need for students, faculty, and staff to park or drive in nearby residential areas.

Key actions:

  • 3 new parking officers added to Public Safety for increased enforcement
  • 5 new shuttles added to reduce on-campus parking demand
  • 623 riders per day use off-campus shuttles instead of driving to campus

Additional measures:

  • All students and employees are required to park in university-owned structures and lots; violations are referred to HR or the Dean of Students
  • A traffic engineering firm is conducting ongoing parking analyses

These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible campus growth and neighborhood impact reduction.

Chapman University is committed to being a respectful neighbor by reducing disruptive behavior and off-campus disturbances. We work closely with the Orange Police Department and the City of Orange to proactively address student conduct issues.

Key efforts:

  • Since 2023, we have seen a 48% reduction in the number of calls involving Chapman students to the Orange Police Department.
  • The City of Orange's disturbance ordinance was amended to impose stronger consequences for repeat offenders
  • Joint liaison visits by Chapman Community Relations & Public Safety and Orange Police help prevent disturbances before they occur

Through these partnerships and preventive measures, we continue to foster a safer, more respectful community environment.
